Ocean Defenders Alliance & Island Divers

We are teamed up with local non-profit, Ocean Defenders Alliance (ODA). In this collaboration, we run dive cleanups using our Island Divers Hawaii boats to remove debris from sites harder to access from shore.

ODA is a registered 501(c)3 non profit in California since 2002 and has been working towards a debris free sea in Hawaii since 2016. We consider Hawaii as paradise islands, blessed with unique and endemic life. These islands deserve our stewardship and care especially since the pollution of our beaches and waters by abandoned fishing gear—both commercial and recreational—as well as plastic and “gyre-type” debris is becoming more frequent.

Dive cleanup team feeling accomplished

We organize a cleanup dive every month with ODA and our local dive club to help reduce the risk of ingestion, entanglement and disease from plastic, fishing nets, lines, etc. We enjoy seeing our dive sites trash free, and feeling reassured that our marine life can continue to thrive. As it is extremely important for us to not cause any damage to our fragile coral reefs, we must ensure our divers have good buoyancy, including excellent hovering and helicopter kick skills, before we embark on a cleanup dive. To participate at a diver, you need a rescue course as well.  We welcome you to join our dive club and keep an eye out for our latest cleanup initiatives and Perfect Buoyancy Diver group courses on our upcoming events.

We are proud to be partnered with an organization that works hard to prevent the declination of marine life. You can get involved in defending our waters by reporting dive sites or shorelines that are particularly dirty, and we can plan to do our cleanup dives in these areas. You can fill out the Debris Report and opt to join in with the cleanup efforts here.
