Family Funday! (July31)

We had some nice cool weather for our dives off the Sea Fox this afternoon. It was great to see some families out enjoying the seas on this beautiful day!

Students had small classes today which was really cool! We had a lot of different groups doing different things, but sharing one passion for diving.

We dropped down onto a large group of turtles at Koko Crater. There are always a lot of turtles at this site but today was crazy! We must have seen 10+ turtles. Needless to say divers enjoyed the first dive and did fantastically on all of their skills.

Divers got to enjoy a nice break and some snacks for their surface interval as we made our way over to the next dive site.

Over at Angler’s, we had great visibility! As always, the reef ledge was teeming with wildlife and there was so much to see!

As the photos prove, we had a lot of camoflague animals on the reef and it was fun finding each of them. Look close enough and youll discover so much about the ocean,

July 31- Bye bye July

Bye bye July, how quickly time passes when you’re having fun diving with Island Divers Hawaii on Oahu!
My divers and I had a wonderful time exploring some newish sites.  We went to Rock Pile, highly recommended for seasoned divers so that you can also drift towards LCU and see some sharks along the way.  A couple of our divers did just that. On the way to LCU they spotted a BABY, two feet long, white tip reef shark.  No wonder they hide out in the LCU, they are born not to far from there.  Rock pile has some amazing coral, plenty of hidey holes, and big cylinders to swim through. Mixed in all that is a little ledge where you can find all manner of things tucked in the crevices.  We found an octopus, a puffer fish, and a couple deadly looking eels hanging out together. Please come back and see us Mariya!

Safe Diving,

Davy

Weather conditions: Slightly overcast at times
Dive Sites: Rock pile to LCU & Keanu Reef
Dive Conditions: Superb viz about 100 ft on both sites, slight current

Blue Meridian 30 July

awesome diving today, with a group of Rimpac visitors wanting to check out the Corsair airplane wreck.  perfect conditions, meaning great viz and mild current, along with sunny blue skies were the order of the day.  Max took the 6 Rimpac divers in, and then i jumped in with another six, Franco, Maria (from Russia!), peter, alesha, jake, and sid.  all good divers!  nice and clear, so good views of the garden eels, plus several eels hanging out in the wreck! 2nd jump was a drift of Fantasy, and the current picked up, so we had to crisscross over the reef in order to not pass over it too quickly!  turtles, sharks, octopus, lots of reef fish, plus coral and swim-throughs.  always a great dive!  thanks to all for safe diving.  larry, max, joe

7/30 Is Zig-Zagging Part of a Good Dive Plan? Yes.

Wed – On the boat we had Destinee, Cara, Tatiana, John, Adam and me. The first dive site due to visibility limitations was Pa’awa, which turned out to be crystal clear! With really good vis, we dropped down, made our way over to some sand, and did some skills. The girls passed with ease, and then we meandered our way back to the boat. Moving onto the next site, we free descended onto main crater at Koko’s, rubbed the Buddha belly for good luck, checked out some neat turtles, I wore an anchor chain impersonating a ghost, and we did some more skills. With super awesome weather we were able to certify both Cara and Destinee! Congrats to both of you.

Sharks are Cruising 7/29

Another wonderful morning on the Sea Fox diving on the southeast side of Oahu.  We had a small group today with Troy, Nick, Kat, and Marcus for a couple deeper dives with a slight south swell and moderate winds.  The water was clear and there was little current on the LCU as we got in the water. Right away on the bottom there was a frogfish hiding on the wreck and schools of goatfish all about. We also found a white tip reef shark hiding under the wreck but it quickly took off from the area as we got close. Soon it was time to head up and get to the next site.

For the second dive we drifted Fantasy Reef and had great viz and a strong current as we jumped in the water.  There were turtles all over the site with some swimming about and a few resting on the bottom.  We also found another white tip reef shark cruising around in the surge near one of the swim thru sections.  The current took us off the reef pretty quickly but the dive was great and a good start to the week.

Turtles and Moray eel invasion! July 29th

Having 91 degrees Fahrenheit and a clear blue sky, a group of certified divers and a student diver head for an afternoon dive into the beautiful Hanauma Bay. Aboard the Sea Fox we head out to the Koko crater for our first dive, after a short ride we suit up and dove in, with a slight current we head out to find the first crater with four Turtles, two of them being clean by a crew of black damselfish, also right under the ledge a big moray eel getting the same treatment but this time by a blue cleaner wrasse. Free cleaning in exchange of not being eaten, good deal if you ask me!

After a surface interval and a short ride to our second site, we moored at Turtle canyon. This is a great site to spot several species of fish and loads of them. We descended to 38 feet (11.5 mts) and with a mild current going towards Diamond Head we started the dive swimming towards Koko Head and just few minutes into the dive we started to spot the numerous eels. First a Zebra moray eel followed by a big green moray, small leopard eel, a long tiger snake eel, white mouth moray and towards the end of the dive, another Zebra moray coming into the same crevice than a big green moray … we were waiting for a fight but it did not go further than a smell here and there.  Going back to the mooring ascend line we encounter a pretty good size Eagle ray being clean, again by the amazing Blue cleaner wrasse.

Congratulations to Cara accomplishing her first Open water dive and to Marja on her first Ocean open water dive! Thanks to Darren and Benjamin.

Scuba Saturday!

Today was a great day to learn how to dive! The weather was fantastic and all of the divers were excited to hop in the water with such awesome conditions.

DCIM100GOPRO

At Koko Crater, divers dropped down onto awesome visibility and calm seas which made it very easy for the students to do their skills. We got to spend time with some of the turtles and other marine life.

DCIM100GOPRO

We did some navigation skills with a compass to complete the skill set required for certification and the students did fantastic! It was really cool to see how different it is to navigate under the waves.

GOPR1527

It seemed as though many of the creatures that we encountered were having an “afternoon nap” and were doing a great job of blending in with their surroundings.

DCIM100GOPRO

At our second site, Anglers Reef, divers had a lot of fun exploring the site. Since we completed most of the skills on the first dive, the students got to spend a little more time playing around in the ocean.

DCIM100GOPRO

There were so many fish out and around the reef ledge, it made for a really great dive.

DCIM100GOPRO

It was great to see a lot of families out enjoying the water and becoming certified. It is really something that, as instructors, love to pass on. Our love for diving and our love of the ocean.

DCIM100GOPRO

We saw a ton of crabs around the site too! We had a lot of eyes  checking each of the small holes around the reef. There was so much to see!

DCIM100GOPRO

Thanks again to all of the divers who came out with us this afternoon on the Sea Fox. Congrats to the new PADI divers!

Sunday diving Sunday July 27th

What a fantastic way to finish the week , Sunday diving Sunday!  A clear sky, calm seas and a nice cooling breeze were the conditions we had for our  Sunday afternoon dive. Coming on the Dive Barge we had a first time divers, student divers and a certified diver so to accommodate everyone we head out to the back crater for the first dive. A great site for students to accomplish skills and master the “art of diving” and also a site with abundance of marine life for experience divers to enjoy!

After a nice, comfortable dive at the Back Crater, we turn to the Turtle Canyon for our second dive, there we had a school of black Surgeon-fish following us during our 49 minutes dive, we also had a couple of turtles (of course) 🙂 four Zebra moray ells, around eight Cornet fish and at least ten other morays. As expected everyone had fun, enjoy the dives and were very hungry, thirsty and tired, so the best way to finish these awesome Sunday diving Sunday is by eating a nice Poke bowl, drinking a couple of Mai Thais while watching the sunset over Waikiki and falling sleep by 9 pm.

Sea Conditions: Calm

Visibility: 50+feet

Current: slight current on Back crater, Slight Westerly Current at Turtle canyon

Sharing the Ocean 7/27

It was a perfect morning for diving today off the southeast side of Oahu. We had a great group of divers as we made our way out to the Corsair for the first dive.  The viz was wonderful as we could see the wreck from the surface and hit the water right away. There was a huge school of goatfish on the bottom as well as butterflyfish and damselfish swimming around.  It was a great first dive and soon it was time to head up for the next dive.

For the second dive we motored around Diamond Head and dove the YO-257.  Again we had great visibility and little current as we dropped down the line.  There were fish everywhere with snappers, wrasses, and butterflyfish all over the wreck.  There were also a couple turtles on the wreck.  We had a great dive with the Atlantis sub cruising around and wonderful fish life all about.

For the last dive we planned to drift the wall at Portlock but with a paddleboard race happening we changed plans with too many boats around.  We headed to Anglers Reef which had great viz and nice calm conditions for a great relaxing last dive.  There was great life around the reef with tons of fish life.  There were a few eels hiding around the reef with an undulated morey and a couple yellowmargin moreys about. We also found a few scorpionfish and a couple leaf scorpionfish hiding on the reef. It was a great end to the day and a wonderful end to the weekend. IMG_5489 IMG_5493 IMG_5520 IMG_5529 IMG_5540

BLAST OFF ! 26 july

another amazing day of hawaiin diving!  sunny blue skies escorted us out to Baby Barge where we moored up for dive one.  ripping current again today, with lots of water moving due to big tide changes.  we saw turtles, sharks, schools of various fish, but no eagle rays today!  out of nowhere came a green wall and the viz dropped to 30 feet.  fortunately that was right at the end of our dive!  2nd jump was a drift of Fantasy reef and we had a blast!  turtles, more sharks, octopus, barracuda, and spectacular viz, with that light blue, clear hawaiin water!  thanks to all for safe diving in challenging conditions!  larry, joe, kelsea
