SSI Shark Ecology Course Online
Do I need a scuba certification to sign up?
No! This course is open to everyone interested in tigers, galapagos, makos, threshers, and more! The Shark Ecology is two parts, a digital learning portion from SSI in course format and a supplementary recording of marine biologist guest speaker, Emily Wilson. The online class will be a guided learning opportunity to explore in more detail the sharks which reside in Hawaii. The online coursework is available as soon as you sign up.
What is in the Shark Ecology course?
In the SSI Shark Ecology course you will investigate the true value of sharks, the important role they role as top apex predators, plus shark evolution and their highly adaptive senses.

You will fully explore the shark side of the elasmobranchs: from deep sea Cookiecutter Sharks to gentle giant Whale Sharks. In present times, we have 440 species of sharks swimming in our seas. We, as humans, have an intriguing relationship with sharks. Augmented by media portrayal, we can be blindsighted to the essential function of top down control in our oceans ecosystems. We are co-existing and sharing the ocean’s resources with sharks. Accordingly, this course explains why sharks are successful predators who deserve our respect and protection.
SSI offers a fully online Shark Ecology program, including in-depth digital learning and accredited certification. Marine biologist, Emily Wilson, will be hosting an online class about our Hawaiian shark residents, as well as threats to sharks worldwide. Keep an eye out for links to our online ecology events, we post on our Facebook & Instagram pages. Although for your certification we do not require you to join our live sessions, we welcome you to come with budding shark enthusiasm!
Dive into the Shark Ecology course to gain an overview of their biology and behaviour, and discover what your role is in shark conservation. Knowledge is power, you will learn how to use your voice and be a shark advocate.
