Pool Experience Event – Snorkel Course, Try Scuba, Refreshers and Buoyancy Course – Hickam Pool

Pool Experience Event
What is it? A company-wide event centered on bringing people closer to the ocean through training in the controlled environment of the pool. These events will be held approximately every six weeks throughout the year. We hope to use these events to increase participation in ocean activities by providing a low-cost option for introductory experiences.
The Snorkel Course
An enrollment fee of $25 includes a free mask and snorkel to keep. Included is a pre-event online training session that covers snorkeling physiology, equipment considerations, and practical water skills. During the in-water portion of the event, students will practice flotation, proper breathing, mask clearing, snorkel clearing, and surface swimming. A basic introduction to surface dives will also be included. Finally, there will be a discussion of safe ocean snorkeling and developing a “snorkeling plan” that includes a description of a typical plan on Oahu’s best snorkeling beaches. This course is suitable for the beginner. Strong swimming ability is not required, but some swimming ability is. Leave with your Snorkeling Certification and some new equipment as well as the confidence to begin to explore some of Oahu’s snorkeling sites.

Try Scuba Diving
Also offered at the Pool Experience Event is a Try Scuba Experience for $25. This is a great way for people to try scuba diving before committing to a full scuba course, or deciding if they want to try scuba diving in the ocean. It is also a great way to introduce children ages 10-14 to the sport. It is very important of the first timer to have a positive first experience with scuba diving, and while it is possible to skip pool training and head straight to the ocean for a first-time experience, a stop at the pool really raises the success and enjoyment rate. This experience includes all equipment and training and takes about one hour. In addition, the $25 enrollment fee may be applied to a purchase of a course on the day of the event!

Scuba Skill Refresher
It is quite common for the new Hawaii resident to have a scuba certification but it may have been more than a year since they have been in the water diving. In that case this $25 refresher course is a really good idea before heading back into the ocean. It can also be booked in conjunction with a family member that is participating in the TRY SCUBA activity during the same event and you can all dive together. All equipment rental is included, however, if you own equipment this is a great time to bring it and check it for proper function. The online training materials included in course registration are themselves an excellent resource to refresh your skills.

Perfect Buoyancy Specialty Course
Are you participating in the SSI Master Scuba Diver Challenge? Here is an opportunity to complete a specialty course towards that rating that focuses entirely on skill development. Without the interesting ocean environment as a distraction, you will be receiving a lot of direct instructor-student time to really improve your buoyancy skills. After a review of basic principles, the course starts with an exercise of achieving the minimum required weight. Of course, this will be different in the pool than in the ocean, but the principles remain the same. The skill development then moves on to relaxed breathing, hovering, underwater movement, and fin techniques. Students will then practice their new skills by navigating an underwater obstacle course and participating in games involving buoyancy control and underwater body positioning.
