What? No diving?
Yes, that is right, no diving. Matt and Sheila went to Belize a few years back with a group and added on an Eco Logdge and had a great time. We’ve been talking about it ever since. And since many of you have indicated a desire to do something similar, we worked with a travel agent to plan us something. It came down to two choices, there was another one that was twice the cost that also looked really good, but in the end this is the one we chose. Here is what we came up with. And yes, if you only want to do this trip and skip the Dive/Explore trip that runs April 2nd to 9th you can do that, or vice versa. Both is better, of course.

Day One
Shared transport from San José to Tortuguero
Pick Up time: 06:00
Note: this pickup time means that if you are only doing this part of the trip you will probably need to arrive the day before and book into the Best Western Irazú in San Jose, where the dive group will be finishing off the trip.

Description:
Early morning departure from the hotel passes through a banana plantation where you can learn about the cultivation and
production processes of this popular fruit. After you reach the canal dock, you will continue on your journey via boat to the
remote Tortuguero canals and your rustic, but comfortable ecolodge located on the waterway canals. After you arrive at the
lodge and check in, you will enjoy lunch. This afternoon you will visit the quaint village of Tortuguero, a picturesque
community accessible only by boat. Your guide will give you time to explore the green sea turtle museum and the beautiful
Atlantic beach. Enjoy some time in the hammock or by the pool before enjoying a delicious dinner. While sleeping tonight be
lulled to sleep by the sounds and rhythm of the jungle.
NOTE: Day 2 and 3 schedules may be reversed or modified, depending upon your day of arrival. Guide will go over scheduled
activities at check-in.
Mawamba Lodge is off the beaten track along the North Caribbean coast, a nesting ground for Costa Rica’s green turtles.
Tortuguero seems to be a place where time has stood still and nature has been left unspoiled. Along the “little Amazon of
Costa Rica,” you will find no roads or cars and everything must be accessed by boat in Tortuguero, including Mawamba Lodge,
which is just a couple of minutes down the canal from the Tortuguero airstrip.
Day Two
Relax, enjoy the resort, book optional tours.
Tours are $35 per person on average. Boat tour, kayaking, canoes, fishing, night walks, town tours are all options.
Day Three
Private Transfer: Guápiles to Paos, expect 3 hours
Pick Up Place: Rio Danta Restaurant
Drop Off Place: Paos Volcano Lodge
The lodge is in a cloud forest area. There are hiking trails on the grounds. Since this is a travel day I expect that we’ll take advantage of the grounds trails, with our without guide.
The resort itself looks pretty great, with some nice areas to relax.
Day Four
We have a full date at this resort, so one of the guided tours off resort grounds sounds like what we should do. I’m leaning toward the Paos Volcano National Park tour, but both the La Paz Waterfalls and Lago Hule tours both look pretty good. We will be in touch prior to the trip so that you can pick your tour and have it reserved. Check the website link above for your other options.
Day Five
Transfer back to San Jose to Holiday Inn Express San Jose Airport (included).

Day Six
Fly out or continue on exploring Costa Rica on your own.
Deposits and Payments
$500 deposit. Payments will be due 60 days prior to departure. Checks only (if you don’t want to add fees) to Dive Travel Services, PO Box 30108, Honolulu HI 96820. You don’t need to send a separtate deposit if you are already going on the April 2nd Dive Trip.
