Utila Honduras dive trip – May 28th to June 4th, 2023 (single male share available)

Coral View from the penthouseHonduras Dive Trip

The Bay Islands of Honduras have long been a popular diving destination.  Our crew has been to Roatan, Utila, and Gaunaja.  We’ve picked out an operation in Utila for this trip that is just a little bit away from the main hustle of downtown.  We are going for the diving, but the younger crowd will enjoy this place.  Utila is popular with a younger set of travelers that fill up hostel style scuba and freediving centers around downtown Utila. There are plenty of small bars and restaurants, and a party every night until 3am.  This is in fact why we are NOT staying in downtown, we got too close last time, and learned a lesson!

We are staying at Coral View, in fact we are buying out the resort ( so that it is only Island Divers guests we didn’t sell enough seats to get this done!).  It has its own bar and restaurant onsite ($2 beers is a bonus) and has its own dock and house reef.  There is also a deck around part of the ocean that makes a “swimming pool”.  It is a 15 walk and 5 minute golf cart ride from the downtown area and peacefully distant from the all night over the water party that Utila is somewhat famous for.

Once you have confirmed your spot with us, book your flights!  I think most of us will book to Roatan and take the ferry over as it is cheap.

sea horse in utila hondurasHow to get there

Our flight is UA 2043 (United) out of IAH (Houston) to RTB (Roatan) that lands in Roatan at 11:31am on the 28th of May.  That is enough time to land, collect baggage, and get a taxi (about $20) to ferry terminal for the 2pm ferry to Utila (round trip about $60).  The American flight gets in at 12:27pm, that is cutting it close, but doable. Once in Utila, Coral View will collect us from terminal.  The ferry back Uitla to Roatan at is 10:20am and takes one hour, then the taxi ride back to the airport (these are really close together). Check the link, 8 min taxi ride.  Be careful what flight you book getting home, make sure you have enough time or plan to relax a day on Roatan.  The United flight out on the 4th of June (12:30pm) is too close to make it, but the American flight is probably okay (1:42pm).  Ferry is scheuduled to arrive at 11:20am, you should be able to make it off the boat, to a cab, and to the airport before noon.  That is still cutting it a bit close for the American Airlines 1:42pm flight, but it is reasonable.  Get travel insurance if you are doing this.

Sheila and I are staying a night, June 4th to 5th, in Roatan at Guava Grove, and yes, it has a swim up bar.  We fly to Houston the next day on United. Half moon bay is a fun day trip if you are spending the extra day on the island.  We are probably going to organize a trip on the fly to a roadside zoo and get some pictures of ourselves holding 3 toed sloths.

There is also the option of flying to San Pedro Sula, taking a 4 hour bus to La Ceiba, and then the ferry from there.  I found a website online that apparently caters to backpackers that recommended this.  However, been there, done that, and 4 hour bus ride from San Pedro Sula no longer sounds like my cup of tea.  However, it may be worth looking into as flights to San Pedro Sula are probably cheaper.  Another option is flying CM Airlines, but it looks like they only go on the 27th of May.  If you want to show up at the resort a day early and chill, that is totally an option.  Just a night at this hotel won’t cost much.

Why Utila?

The diving is great in Honduras, the Bay Islands of Roatan, Utila and Guanaja specifically.  We have been to them all.  We picked this resort because we have been booking a lot of expensive places lately and wanted to get one on the more modest side of the budget going.  We know the diving is going to be good.  The resort owner seems to be good guy and they just got a new boat delivered.  They are making improvements.  We also have the chance of booking the whole place out, though if we do it will be 40 or more of us.  If that happens, it is going to be damn fun.  I mean, it is going to be fun anyway, but taking over a small resort in Utila sounds like a good time.  To get a good idea of the diving and what a trip to Utila is like:
