Deep, Dark and Wrecked

Tuesday morning was a great day for diving on the Sea Fox. We had a boat of Advanced and experienced divers from across the U.S, Europe and our own backyard of Hawaii Kai. The guest on the boat have not only been diving with us today, but the whole week! So we took a vote on where to descend on our first dive. The group was looking for something deep and sunken, so Capt. Joe pointed the bow into the right direction. The wreck we picked this particular morning was the Kahala Barge, a 250 yard vessel resting at 90 feet,  upright and fully intact. This wreck has a fun penetration point in the pilothouse, which made for great photos. After a slow ascent and and safety stop, the group hopped back on the boat for hot chocolate and cookies while we motored off to our next destination. Once the group was all warmed up and equipment with new tanks we began to suit up for our next dive. For our second dive of the day we chose a fun and relaxed Drift Dive through Spitting Caves. This descent was a negative one as, and it couldn’t of been better! With no air in our BCD’s the group went one after another and entered the water heading down below the surface where we all re-grouped and carried on. This dive was visibility was awesome, and the current was fast. We stuck together as a team and caught a few great creatures cruising past. Several big sea turtles swam again the current effortlessly, while eels and octopus hid between the crack. Several large nunu trumpet fish were hanging out and a cute juvenile cow fish was spotted and captured on film!

Diving with a group and happy an experienced divers is always a fun time. We all came back salty and smiling with 2 more dives to add to the log book!

What a relaxing, sunny, awesome day of diving! Westley, Matt, and I (YEP that’s it) took out the Fox along with Capt Kendall for an Advanced Open Water Day One/ first time Corsair adventure. Calm seas and no current was found at the Corsair as we followed the descent line down to the plane. Reef fish of differing varieties swam amongst the scattered plane pieces, a large Moray Eel peeked out of the fuselage, and Garden Eels swayed back and fourth in the distance…

After short surface interval it was on to Anglers for a leisurely Drift Dive. Great conditions, good visibility, and many sea creatures cruised the wall of Anglers… Millet seed Butterfly’s, Moorish Idols, Hawaiian Squirrels, a large group of Puffer fish, and Eels of differing varieties…

Turtles before Turkey! Nov 26

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0361.

The day before Thanksgiving and a happy band of divers set off for a Wednesday of Adventure! Allison began her DSD day learning a bit at the IDH shop before entering the pool for a quick skill session… which she ACED! then we met Peter, Charles, Unmesh, Prabha, Melissa, Jason and Gil back at the shop to board the Sea Fox. Our first destination… Koko Crater. We tied up and all divers entered the water safely and descended using the lines. We started our tour at Back Crater, crossed over to Big Buddha, and were met by a host of turtles.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0352.

They were very active and friendly, swimming in , through, and around the divers who did their best to stay out of their way. As we made our way to Little Buddha we came across an Eel laying under the crater lip…

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0358.

and darting about the sandy bottom were a couple of small Founders…

LCU doesn’t dissappoint…

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0334.

A gloomy morning morphed into a sunshine filled day for our trip out on the morning Fox. We were pleased to have the Londono family (Luis. Sophie, Mary, Katrina, and Nicholas), Paul, Margaret, Jack, Lauen, Ali, Noah, Drew, Sean, Ryan, and Trevor. Once moored up there was found a strong current, so all our divers used the descent lines on their way down to the LCU. Several sharks circled under and around the site…

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0305.

while a family of 4 Spotted Eagle Rays flew in formation around the blocks…

DCIM100GOPROG0010310.

All our divers ascended safely and after a surface interval we decided to Drift Anglers Reef. All our divers entered the water and began a slow gentle drift in the current…

Eels, Octopus, Butterflys, Tangs, Moorish Idols, and Squirrel fish danced in and out of the reef… a great dive.

Thank you to all our divers for a safe and fun day of diving!

Fun for the whole family!

This morning started in the rain on the Sea Fox, but that did not stop the buzzing of our divers! Today we had a family of 6 diving with us: Jen, Rachel, Allison, Cory, Amy, Rhett with their Aunt Debbie soaking in the sun and along for the ride. This morning we selected a deep wreck dive at the Kahala Barge. The seas where a bit choppy and the current strong, but everyone had a pretty easy time following the drop line to the mooring and descended towards the top of the wreck. At the top of the Kahala we were meet by to Eagle Rays that seems to be suspended in the current. Our second dive was just as awesome once we descended for our drift through Fantasy Reef. Below at 50ft we all caught up with a big Green Sea Turtle cruising around. After we hung out with a few Moray Eels and a cute Kokala Porcupinefish :). Dive conditions on the surface we a bit cloudy and windy but the visibility today was awesome, the reef alive, and all of our customers excited!

A full boat of Happy Divers was on the schedule this morning…Abby, Adam, Bob, Chris L, Darienne, Jamie, Jennifer, Joe, Joseph, Matthew, Chris N, Miles, Nicholas, Patricia, Paul, Ricardo, and Sherrye.  A beautiful day met the folks aboard the Sea Fox as we left Maunaloa Harbor. Our destination… Kahala Barge! Briefed and ready to go, we moored up on the wreck and divers took their turns dropping in to the slightly choppy ocean. Using the lines we hit our destination when I spied just off the stern of the ship…

DCIM100GOPROG0010216.

A quick chase and a few pics later the Spotted Eagle Ray flew off into the distance… back at Kahala Barge our divers enjoyed the swim throughs, spotted a Snow Flake Eel, and observed many of the reef fish that make Kahala their home. Soon it was time to surface and after a brief interval out of the water a drift of Anglers Reef was in order…

Anglers

Good visibility, a slight current, and an abundance of reef life was enjoyed by all… Triggers, Trumpets, Goatfish, Moray Eels, Butterflys… all out and about doing their Saturday thing. A great dive was had by all…

Puffer Monday! Nov 17

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0203.

A beautiful Monday to start our DSD Session with Beverly and Mike at the new pool… they both did great on their skill set and we set off to meet the Fox and start our ocean dives. We were met by Matt, Joe, Lindsey, Jaclyn, and Chapin who was beginning her Open Water Certification with her OW dives 1 and 2…

Off to Koko Craters! A slight current, Fair visibility (60 ft) and no surge were on the schedule. The divers all were up to the task, and after Chapin aced her skills, off we went to observe the life at Little and Big Buddha. Sleeping turtles, Reef fish, and a very active Moray eel were all out and about the site…

Moray_eel

Next on to Anglers Reef where a very inquisitive and friendly puffer fish kept getting in the way of Chapins skill session. The puffer would get right up in our face, swam between us as we tried to do Chapins Alternate Breathing skill, followed all the divers as we went about our tour,  and even decided to swim through my legs as I stopped to show the divers some fish… a very nutty Puffer!

But a fantastic day was had by all, thank you to all our divers for a safe and fun Monday!

6 Pack Divers!

Beautiful Friday afternoon with an Open Water class of 6! Our Open Water students traveled all the way from Los Angeles and British Columbia. Our afternoon dive sites were planned for our favorite sandy patches at Koko Crater and Turtle Cove. The seas were calm with a bit of current below. At our first dive we circled up for a bit of skills in a quite sand patch, while Larry lead our certified divers on an underwater exploration. Our second dive was even better once we descended on Turtle Cove. Below at 36ft we all saw a huge Spotted Eagle Ray cruising along with a tiny Eagle Ray at it’s side. After a bit more skills our 6 pack of divers spotted two very big green sea turtles, we were all in smiles! Dive conditions and visibility today was awesome,  everyone is looking forward to our dives tomorrow and certifications towards our 6 new PADI Open Water Divers!

Double Mint Diving 11*14*2014

This morning on the Sea Hound we were joined by an international cast of advanced divers. With variable trades and a nearly glass-like surface, the conditions were especially mint for diving. Today’s dive sites: The Corsair & The Sea Cave.

*The Corsair*
105ft – 25min

One HUNDRED foot visibility and a mild current allowed the divers to free descent onto the plane. At the crystal clear bottom the divers hovered over the wreck and got a close encounter with Bertha, the MASSIVE green moray eel that resides in engine compartment of the Corsair. Aside from Big Bertha and the plane, the divers also encountered a school of fusiliers, an octopus, and a field or garden eels.

*Sea Cave*
68ft – 44min

With the current picking up, the divers entered the shelter of the sea cave hopeful for a shark siting. Unfortunately, no sharks today, but they divers encountered many free swimming turtles inside the cave. Outside of the cave the divers encountered a massive school of moorish idols and an assortment of eels and starfish.

A special thanks to the crew of the Sea Hound: Capt. John, Anthony, and Sean (DMC)

What a great Wednesday afternoon dive on the Fox! Great weather, sun was shining, and a calm bay welcomed our divers: Lloyd and Karen doing their DSD, Drew completing his Open Water Certification, James and Morgan who were Certified, and Manolo who was conducting a Rescue Diver Class  along with Shaun.  We moored up at Koko Crater for our first dive and were met with 70ft visibility and a slight current. Turtles, eels and reef fish cruised the area and hid in the coral of the crater…

Hawaiian Honu at Koko Crater

Next on to Anglers reef.. again great visibility and no current. Using the lines our divers dropped into the shelf and began a leisurely dive where many reef fish, eels, and octopus were observed in and around the site… a great day of diving for all!
