The Current Conundrum (Sept27)

It was raining a bit as we left the Hawaii Kai marina for our morning dive on the Sea Fox. No worries, it didn’t bring our divers down, we were more then excited to jump into some awesome visibility!

GOPR3272

We jumped into the water at our first site, which we decided would be the Corsair. We were a bit concerned about the conditions, seeing that we were having rather large surface swells. Not problems, however, despite a bit of current, visibility looked fantastic!

DCIM100GOPRO

The plane was teeming with marine life as always, from schools of fish to the ever-famous garden eels that surround this shipwreck. Divers got a chance to check out all different kinds of eels and starfish that were grazing the bottom of Maunalua Bay.

DCIM100GOPRO

After about 22minutes or so, divers made their way back up the line to again board the boat. The currents had changed quite a bit while we were below and doing our safety stop was a bit of a challenge. None the less, divers were fantastic and made their was back aboard the Sea Fox with no problems.

DCIM100GOPRO

At our second site, we decided that with the conditions, it was best to check out some of the shallower reefs in the area. We headed over to drift Angler’s Reef and came across some fantastic conditions.

DCIM100GOPRO

There was so many fish lining the reef’s edge today! From the ever present squirrelfish to the morrish idols.

DCIM100GOPRO

We really enjoyed swimming through the schools of fish and examining the ledge to see what sort of creatures were housed within. We even came across this huge trident snail!

DCIM100GOPRO

Of course we had the green sea turtle enjoying the warm waters this morning, he was in his usual spot taking a nap and watched the group as we passed by.

DCIM100GOPRO

One of my favorite things about this site is the abundance of scorpionfish. There a bit difficult to spot, but they reside all along this reef.

DCIM100GOPRO

We drifted just over a quarter mile before we made our way back to the surface. I would say that we had a rather enjoyable morning, despite some of the conditions that we had to deal with. Well done divers! Hope to see you out on the boats again soon!

The Wonders of Drifting 9/26

It was such a wonderful morning today off the Sea Fox with a small group of divers out for some fun.  Lisa, Mikiko, Jeremy, and I headed out the the barges for the first dive. The current was really strong as we tried to tie the boat up so we decided on drifting the wrecks.  We dropped in at Baby Barge and had a turtle resting by the wreck. As we cruised to New Barge and the cement block pile beyond it we had reef fish everywhere. There were schools of damselfish and wrasses swimming about the blocks with butterflyfish and tangs darting about.  As we got to the LCU we spotted a white tip reef shark swimming around and 3 more white tips hiding under the wreck. Right as we were ending the dive we saw a spotted eagle ray cruising along the bottom.   It was a great dive with wonderful viz and tons of sea life.

For the second dive we drifted Fantasy Reef and it was another great dive.  There were turtles all about the reef swimming around or resting on the bottom.  We also found a few eels hiding about the reef.  There were fish everywhere swimming about the area. It was such a great morning and congrats to Lisa on finishing her enriched air nitrox class.

SHARKS WITHOUT BORDERS ! 25 September

trade winds are back!  and the sea was calm when we headed out to the Landing Craft Unit (LCU) to see some sharks!! current was strong, and we had to use the lines to save air, but it was great because the frogfish was sitting right at the bottom of the down line!  otherwise we might have missed him!!  under the wreck were 3 large whitetip sharks catching a snooze.  they woke up, did a few circles and settled down again.  back on top of the wreck an adult eagle ray cruised right up to us and we headed for the line.  out today was old friend Pam Holt, an incredible singer and movie/TV actress, plus jazmine, restauranteur in Seattle, and Chris, who just returned from a medical mission to North Korea!  he is part of a team of surgeons that perform serious operations for people in areas with no medical options, for free!  similar to Doctors Without Borders!  great stuff and great divers!  2nd jump was Fantasy Reef and we had a blast, seeing turtles, octopus, eels, scorpion fish, barracuda, and lots of reef fish!  thanks to all for safe diving,  larry and kendal

Super Sized Stingray (Sept23)

Aboard the Sea Fox this afternoon, we had a lively group of divers who were more then excited to jump into the underwater world. We had many groups of divers who were enjoying their vacations and were more then ready to see what Hawaii had to offer in the Maunalua Bay area.DCIM100GOPRO

At Koko Crater, we got to enjoy a lot of great schools of fish and only had a slight current. The visibility was fantastic and divers got some great photos of the underwater topography. These Buddha statues that have been placed at the site are a great spot to snap pictures to remember your experience.

DCIM100GOPRO

The best parts of this site is the fact that there is such a variety of things to see. Today we came across some large helmet snails and swam alongside some green sea turtles! Its so much fun getting up close to these graceful sea creatures.

IMG_0799

We hopped back aboard the boat to make our way to the next dive site, and had some really great conversations during our surface interval. The divers enjoyed hanging out on the bow and chatting while enjoying the afternoon sunshine.

photo 3

Despite the fact that we had some rather strong surface currents, the drive was rather enjoyable and we had some light snacks and beverages as well.

photo 2

We hopped in at our second site, Angler’s Reef, and had almost no current at the bottom. The visibility was again fantastic and we made our way along the reef edge.

DCIM100GOPRO

We spotted schools of fish hiding under the ledges and tons of urchins along the bottom.

lllll

It was good that our divers today had such great buoyancy because we were not churning up the bottom, making it easy for us to check out all the nooks and crannies of the reef.

DCIM100GOPRO

I love checking out all of the pencil urchins that line the reef as well, they come in many different colors and shapes and its amazing how they fit themselves into the tiny holes.

DCIM100GOPRO

Once we made the turn to head back to the boat, divers had spotted a huge stingray along the reef! it was massive and was probably the biggest one that I have seen in these waters. Divers were really luck to see it so close and it swam by us long enough for us to snap some really good pictures!

Kahe-2006-01-15_037[1]

Thanks to all the divers who came out and enjoyed the oceans wonders with us today. It was a great group of people and I hope to see you guys on the boat again soon!

Congratulations to our newest certified divers as well!

A Change in the Currents

We were greeted with another wonderful day of diving in Oahu. A small group of divers aboard the afternoon Sea Fox made for an awesome dive trip. We decided that our first stop would be at Turtle Canyons, which had fantastic visibility!

DCIM100GOPRO

The coral formations at this site house some awesome marine life. It is different each time you dive this site because there is always so much to see.

DCIM100GOPRO

As long as you keep your eyes open and are looking in all the right places, you will soon discover all the fun things to see. Today we spotted octopus, eels, starfish, and tons of fish!

DCIM100GOPRO

At our second site, we decided that with such a great group of divers that we would give Spitting Caves a go. It was a great way for some of our students to finish up their Open Water certification dives.

DCIM100GOPRO

Of course we saw tons of fish and had a great time exploring each of the caves that line the southeastern point of the island. It was an odd situation when halfway through the dive, the currents changed a bit. We still had an easy time navigating the site, and we couldn’t have asked for better visibility!

9/23 Playing it Close to Home

Monday – On the boat we had Sam, Greg, Dan, Tim, and Jim. The first site up was the Corsair; it’s one of our deepest sites and I love diving it because when it’s possible to dive it it’s always really peaceful. Today was no exception with a very small current that tapered off towards the end of our dive and 100+ visibility. We saw some goat fish, a bunch of dascyllus hung out with us on the line, and there were tons of garden eels as always. From there it was perfect timing to go dive spitting caves and look for some sharks! Unfortunately we didn’t spy any sharks, but we saw a bunch of octopus, an eagle ray and a couple green sea turtles. Oh and some mature frogfish! Hideous! Thanks everyone for coming out, we’ll see you next time.

Sunny Sunday (Sept21)

We were greeted by calm waters today! Jumping in at each site was such a treat, we had almost no currents on all three of our Sunday dives. A great group of divers came out to see what was happing on the southside of Oahu.

DCIM100GOPRO

Dropping in at our first site, LCU, we were welcomed by two white-tipped reef sharks, one of which was 6+ft long! They have been hanging around the past few days and we were lucky enough to spot some today!

vfdf

There we schools of fish surrounding the wreck as well. Its always fun to check under each of the concrete blocks and see what is hiding beneath. Today we saw tons of squirrelfish. On the way back up, some of the divers were lucky enough to spot a baby eagle ray that had a wingspan of 1ft! So cute!

photo 2

We had a nice surface interval on our way to the second site over in Waikiki. We sure spent a lot of time on the bow enjoying the warm sunshine.

DCIM100GOPRO

Dropping down onto the YO257 was a really fantastic experience today. We had almost no current and visibility was fantastic! Many of the divers made their way over to the San Pedro, which is just a short swim away.

DCIM100GOPRO

Exploring the deck of this wreck is a lot of fun because there are so many things to see and a lot of swimthroughs to enjoy.

DCIM100GOPRO

Exploring the bridge is my favorite, with the stairs and cabin housing many different species of fish. There were some rather large ahi swimming inside today, and we got to check them out as we made our way back to the boat.

photo 3

Coming back from the Waikiki area, we enjoyed a nice lunch with sandwiches, brie, hummus, and fresh pineapple. It was a great way to recharge for our final dive.

DCIM100GOPRO

We drifted Spitting Caves for our last site, and divers not only got great visibility, but experienced the marine life at its best. We collected a lot of debris from this beautiful site today, including 10+lbs of fishing weights, soda cans, and even a fishing pole! It was great to have such awesome divers help cleanup some of our most treasured reefs!

GO SEAHAWKS! sept 21

Another great day on and in the blue waters of Oahu.  Captain Kendal took us over to the back crater at Kokos, where we jumped into the warm, clear water.  80 plus degrees – no wetsuit needed!  A bit of surge, but intro diver Alex handled it like a veteran – much better than her experienced Dad!  Just kidding peter!! Dad and daughter both big sea hawk fans!

IMG_1930 DSC06907 DSC06904 DSC06822

Also along was Ria, doing dives 3/4 for her Open water cert!  It takes her a minute to get used to being underwater, then she’s a like long time diver – great buoyancy and swimming skills.  Several big turtles, eels, and big fat statues, plus lots of reef fish were seen along the way!  2nd jump was over at Turtle Canyons, where we saw shoaling juvenile reef fish, a baby turtle, an octopus, plus some big eels!  Thanks to all for safe diving,  larry, kendal

M and M, West Side Fun – 9/20/14

We had another great trip on the South Seas II, visiting two of our favorite dive sites. At the Mahi, conditions were nice with a little current and great visibility. The wreck is always a treat and this day there was a monster barracuda hanging around along with a couple spotted eagle rays and friendly puffers. At Makaha Caverns, we dropped in on some of the best swim throughs around and found a baby white tip reef shark, a couple nice turtles, a slipper lobster, and a sneaky scorpionfish. After a nice long dive, we surfaced to consume the best burgers in the Waianae area on a weekend afternoon and headed home. Thanks all for another great day of diving!

Eagle Ray Flyby (Sept20)

It was a humid afternoon aboard the Sea Fox. We had a full boat today with many different levels of divers. Some certified, students and DSD’s alike came together to enjoy the awesome conditions out on the south side of Oahu.

DCIM100GOPRO

At our first site, we spotted many different kinds of sea creatures, from the famous green sea turtle to the white mouthed eels. The water temperature was fantastic and most of the divers enjoyed the day without wearing a wetsuit.

DCIM100GOPRO

We spotted many of the different statues that sit beneath the waves at this particular site. It allowed all of the divers to get some great photos while the visibility was good!

DCIM100GOPRO

After we spent nearly 40minutes underwater, we made our way back onto the boat for a shirt surface interval and snacks while chatting amongst the other divers. It was a great conversation!

photo 5

We decided to hop in at our second site after a short interval. Since we didn’t go very deep and we weren’t planning on going any deeper, we didn’t need to spend a lot of time aboard the boat. WE were ready to hop back in!

photo 4

The visibility was fantastic at our second site. There was so much to see right after we hopped into the water!

DCIM100GOPRO

We spent time exploring the reef floor and found some really great things, like this hidden scorpionfish.

DCIM100GOPRO

As usual, the reef was teeming with marine life and the fish were out in abundance. The water got even warmer, and was now at a warm 83*F.

DCIM100GOPRO

While we were cruising along the reef, we noticed a spotted eagle ray swimming past. It was huge! We tried to follow for a bit but he was going rather fast, and we just couldn’t keep up. Such a great thing to see in the shallows!

photo 3

After the dive, we again made our way back aboard the Sea Fox to head back into the marina.

photo 2

Many of the divers left with not only a great experience, but some new friends as well!

Congrats to the newest PADI divers and thanks to everyone who came out and made the afternoon so fantastic!
