DCIM100GOPRO

Another beautiful day out in the bay! Chris (DSD), Chris (Cert) and I decided to check out Koko Crater as neither had ever dove in Maunaloa Bay before… and the site didn’t let us down! Turtles, turtles everywhere! We started at back crater and were met by 4 turtles, 3 eels, and a host of reef fish… on to Big Buddha and more of the same! The visibility was great, but we had to contend with a bit of current, but both divers dealt with it like champs…

DCIM100GOPRO

Back on the boat and on o Pa’ava… where the fish near the main rock were being their usual feisty selves… especially the Sgt. Majors! Again a bit of a strong Koko Head current so we stayed somewhat close to the boat so we wouldn’t have to fight it coming back. During our search of the area a Taco made an appearance… and then time to head back to the boat.

DCIM100GOPRO

A great day of diving was had by all… thanks for a safe and enjoyable day Chris and Chris…

BARRACUDA !! 9 October

More diving fun today as we took the Sea Hound out to Baby Barge to look for turtles, sharks, and rays!  Turtles were there in abundance, and we enjoyed watching them glide through a pretty strong current, and still look relaxed.  whereas we had to kick hard and look for relief in the lee of the barge and down low!  but it was a great experience and everyone enjoyed the exercise!  2nd jump was a drift of Fantasy Reef, and it was again spectacular!  the great barracudas followed us around, and we saw huge turtles, plus a small octopus and a big, confident one sitting out in the open like a king in his kingdom!  andrew and rachael are on their way from beginners to experts, and cedric and monica are very experienced divers from switzerland, and also out was don, working on his Wreck Spec!  thanks to all for safe diving,  larry, capt. joe

Blood Orange Moon: A Change in Currents (Oct8)

Another day of clear waters on the southside of Oahu. The visibility was awesome on both of our dives aboard the Sea Fox this afternoon. We had a group of both certified and non certified divers that joined us in the warm waters.

GOPR1199

The schools of fish were very active today on the reef, one of my personal favorites, the Moorish idol, was around all parts of the reef. They tend to hang out in smaller schools and can be found on all parts of the Koko Crater site.

DCIM100GOPRO

The current picked up a bit towards Koko Head and divers had a nice easy swim back to the boat. We enjoyed a nice surface interval with snacks before we made our way to the second site.

DCIM100GOPRO

At Turtle Canyons, we spotted a lot of octopus hanging out in the little holes along the corals. They came in all different sizes and divers had fin time looking for them throughout the dive.

DCIM100GOPRO

Theres always so many different things to see at this site, we came across turtles and eagle rays and of course many schools of fish. We spotted all different kinds of eels, including the viper eel that is very prominent at this site.

Thanks to all who came out today, we hope to see you again soon on the boat!

“Current” events!… Oct 8

DCIM100GOPRO

The passengers and crew set out on a beautiful “HUMP” day to explore some wrecks in Maunaloa Bay… Don (beginning his wreck specialty), Angela, John, Jason, Jungug, Lauren, Brad, Michelle, John, Jared, Hollis, Davey (who was awesome as my support staff) and I all looked forward to a great day! We decided to drop in on Baby Barge… where we were met with beautiful visibility but a very strong CURRENT.  Everyone descended safely using the mooring lines and we began our dive. We were met by a lone turtle resting cruising around the barge, Don did an excellent job on  Day 1 of his specialty, and all divers completed a safe and fun dive and returned to the boat.

DCIM100GOPROAngela doing some reef cleanup!

Our second site was just to the east of China Wall where we dropped in on a group of turtles at a turtle cleaning station, then drifted towards the wall. Much to see… Turtles, eels of all shapes and colors, and finally an eagle ray made an appearance just as we started our safety stop. A great ending to a great Wednesday of diving… thanks guys!

Shark Tour of Hawaii Kai 10/7

It was an amazing morning on the Sea Hound for the advanced charter today.  There was a bit of a current today as we tried for the Corsair so we changed to the LCU for the first dive and it was a great choice.  There was great viz and we had a nice dive around the site.  There were 5 white tip reef sharks hiding out under the wreck and a large school of goatfish swimming near by.  It was a great dive but soon it was time to head to the second dive site.

For the second dive we drifted Sea Cave and again had some wonderful viz and a great dive.  As we entered the cave there were 3 white tip reef sharks hiding out.  It was a bit stirred up inside the cave so we exited and cruised along the wall.  There were reef fish everywhere with schools of milletseed butterflyfish and damsel fish swimming about the rocks.  We found a few eels and a large octopus hiding in the coral.  As we were coming to the end of the dive we found a couple sea turtle hanging out in the current. It was a truly wonderful morning.LCU

LIKE A PANCAKE ! 6 October

Wow, such nice conditions today!  Trade winds are down, seas were pancake flat, and the sun was shining in the blue sky.  We headed out to Baby Barge as Elisabeth wanted to see turtles and Mufi and Robert wanted to see a wreck, BB was a perfect choice!  There is still more plankton in the water than usual, but the viz wasn’t bad at about 100 feet.  Mufi and Robert were just certified in the Puget Sound where the viz was 5 feet on their dives 3/4.  So our Hawaii waters blew there minds!  Fun to see and hear underwater!  2nd jump was Fantasy reef, and speaking of turtles, wow, it was packed with big green Hawaiian sea turtles.  We also saw barracuda, octopus, big eels, and there is a shark hanging out there these days too!  Thanks to all for safe diving.  larry and kellen

Current Pickup (Oct6)

More great weather for a dive aboard the Sea Hound this afternoon. We were joined by some divemaster candidates that were working on their mapping project, but other than that we had a small group of experienced divers.

DCIM100GOPRO

At Koko’s, we dropped into some mild currents that really picked up as the dive went on. It proved to be  a challenge swimming back to the boat when we turned the dive.

DCIM100GOPRO

We did come across a lot of cool things, like this school of goatfish. Theres always such a variety of things to see at this site. It was great visibility as well.

IMG_1951

For our second dive, we chose to drift from Anglers to Secret, since the current picked up so much. This proved to be a good choice. Divers got to enjoy a nice relaxing dive along the reef.

IMG_1942

As usual, we came across many different kinds of eels along the ledge and were down for quite some time. I even started to get a bit chilly towards the end!

DCIM100GOPRO

Thanks for coming out this afternoon everyone! Its great spending time with experiences divers!

Sunday Sun, Surf, and Sea Adventure 10/5

It was an awesome Sunday dive trip today off the Sea Hound for the three tanker.  For the first dive we hit Sea Cave and had a nice time. There was a bit of a swell but good conditions underwater and a nice current along the wall.  Right as we entered into the cave we found 5 white tip reef sharks hiding inside.  We cruised along the wall with schools of milletseed butterflyfish and sergeant damselfish all around the rocks. There were also a few eels hiding about including a large zebra morey and a few white mouth moreys.

For the second dive we tied up at Kahala Barge and again it was a great dive.  There was a bit of a current but great visibility as we swam around the wreck.  The wreck is a great site with black coral growing around parts of it and colorful reef fish hiding around it. We didn’t have any large marine life cruising about but plenty of smaller reef life everywhere.

For the last dive we drifted Fantasy Reef and it was great.  There were turtles everywhere mostly resting under ledges and a few swimming about.  We also found a few more eels hiding about the reef and tons of reef fish swimming all about us.  It was a great way to spend a Sunday.

A Double Dose (Oct5)

Another great day for diving today in Oahu! We had a full boat today and it made for an exciting day out on the water. We decided that a boat full of certified divers and students that we would tie off at Fantasy Reef and do a double dive, to maximize our experience.

IMG_1658

After a short briefing from the instructors, divers separated into appropriate groups and made their way to the reef.

GOPR3154

Divers spotted many different kinds of marine life today, from white tipped reef sharks to huge green sea turtles.

DCIM100GOPRO

After spending a half hour or so on the sea floor we made our way back onto the boat and enjoyed some light snacks and great conversation before we headed back into the water for our second dive.

IMG_1661

It started to rain lightly as we hopped in again, but the conditions stayed rather good for the second part of the dives.

DCIM100GOPRO

We enjoyed the swimthroughs and the massive schools of fish that inhabit the reef. There was tons of sea stars, from the large crown of thorns to the puffy pincushion.

DCIM100GOPRO

We came across scorpion fish and eels and many other kinds of marine life today. With such great visibility, it was hard not to see so many cool things!

DCIM100GOPRO

Once again we made our way back onto the boat and headed back into the marina with a group of new PADI certified divers! Congrats guys!

Worldly Waters (Oct4)

Conditions were fantastic for the afternoon dives! Visibility was over 100 ft and divers got to experience Hawaii diving at its best! We had a very small group of divers aboard the Sea Hound from all over the world.

DCIM100GOPRO

At Koko Crater, divers got to freshen up on their diving, since some of them had not been in the water for a while. They picked a great day to come and get back into the water, since conditions were pristine.

DCIM100GOPRO

We spent time exploring the ridges of the crater, coming across many sea turtles, who were enjoying a nice afternoon nap. We came across many different kinds of fish as well, including this little leafy scorpionfish!

DCIM100GOPRO

After a half hour or so exploring the sea floor, we made our way back onto the boat and decided upon our next site. Since the divers were comfortable and experienced, we made our way over to Sea Cave since the conditions were so good.

DCIM100GOPRO

We dropped into the wall just before 3pm and had great visibility. We made our way into the cave and came across a rather large white tipped reef shark! He swam with us for a while before making his way back out to open waters.

DCIM100GOPRO

After we exited the cave, we began to drift east along the wall and enjoyed the many schools of fish that were inhabiting the reef.

DCIM100GOPRO

We were lucky to have such great conditions this afternoon, thanks everyone who came from all over the world to go diving with us, it was a blast!
