DIVING VANCOUVER! 19 december

well, we had some Vancouverians diving with us today, and they were really enjoying diving in Hawaii!!  warm waters and great viz goes a long way in the dive world.  then throw in some sharks, turtles, and big eels, and you have a great dive or two! Jasveen wanted to see sharks, so off to the Landing Craft wreck (LCU) we went.  Capn Kellen and Instructor Manolo got us hooked up and we jumped in to a mild current, with great viz!  everyone got down easily and we cruised underneath the wreck, spotting the sharks who were hanging around there, and gave us a nice closeup view!  no rays today, but we found a frogfish and a large barracuda was eyeing the feeding schools of fish around us!  2nd jump was over at Fantasy reef, and it is always a treat for divers!  huge turtles and eels, with beautiful topography – arches and chimneys to swim through and over.  good viz also, with a bit of current!  thanks to all for safe diving!  larry, captain kellen

Hump Day Happenings! Dec 17

one

A great Wednesday met our divers as the sun peeked through clouds and the winds died down a bit. Our band of happy divers included Amber and Allison (OW 1/2) Conor (OW 3/4) David, Katie, Kevin, Nathaniel, and Nola (Cert) all ready and excited about getting in the water. We moored up at Koko Crater to practice our skills and see what creatures we could find under the ledge.  Of course TURTLES!

A few slept happily under the overhanging coral and as usual one snuggled up to the anchor. At big Buddha a friendly Puffer looked out from a small cave…

All our divers returned to the Hound safely and then on to Anglers Reef. Dropping down the lines an abundance of fish life sped past like busy street traffic… Squirrel fish, Long nose butterfly, Trumpet fish, and of course Eels…

An excellent day of diving… thank you to all our divers for a safe and fun day out on the Hound… Keep Diving!

Drifting with the Sharks 12/17

It was an awesome morning today diving off the southeast side of Oahu on the Sea Hound.  We had a smaller group of divers today as we headed out to the LCU for the first dive.  When we got there the current was too strong and we decided on a barge drift.  We had wonderful viz as we dropped in and right away found a few white tip reef sharks sitting under the wreck. They got a little spooked and started swimming out around the area.  There was also a frogfish hanging on the wreck and schools of goatfish all about.  As we drifted to New Barge we came across a large sandbar shark just cruising through the area.  We found a green sea turtle at New barge and one more by Mini Barge as we were ending our safety stop.

For the second dive we drifted Fantasy Reef and had another wonderful dive.  There were turtles all over the reef resting on the bottom or swimming about the reef.  There were also reef fish everywhere with butterfly fish and wrasses swimming about and damselfish defending the little batches of reef.  Soon it was time to head up and enjoy the rest of the day.

How ’bout them dolphins?!

This afternoon on the Seahound we were joined by a mixed bag of divers and students from all around the world. With a persistent trade from the east and a moderate swell, the boat was rocking with adventure. The first dive site of the day: Turtle Canyons

With a prevailing Koko head current the divers entered the water with 40 foot visibility and were met with a bottom temperature of 75 degrees, chilly for us in Hawaii. Despite the below average vis, the divers delighted in the company of many aquatic creatures: giant moray eels, a school of moorish idols, trigger fish, and a couple of massive pincushion starfish.

The conditions at Koko Craters were exactly the same as the previous dive site: Persistent Koko Head current, 40 foot vis, and a bottom temp of 75 degrees. There was a noticeable absence of turtles at the dive site. One, however, did make a flyby at the end but the main attraction was the pod of 20 spinner dolphins hanging out just off site. Yes, 20 spinner dolphins hung out with some DSD’s and a couple of certified divers. Eat your heart out if you’ve been chasing the chance to see these magnificent creatures underwater. The presence of Flipper and his 19 buddies overshadowed other creatures spotted during the dive: Hawaiian Sergeant Fish, Damsel fish, and a crown of thorns.

Special thanks to the crew for making it all possible! Thank you Captain Sophie and Peter!!!

ANGIE’S LIST 16 december

blue skies are back, with strong trades, so bouncy on the surface but stupendous under!  Angie and son Julian were out today, and on her list was a shark or two!  so off to the Landing Craft Unit we went.  Captain sophie got us moored up, and we headed into the waves.  current was moderate, viz good, so no problem getting beneath the wreck to see the whitetips that rest there.  dennis and ron were out, as well dan and daughter isabella, and the millers!  plus Snow and Yan from SF. great group of divers!  all had a great dive, as we saw sharks close up, eagle rays, an octopus, as well as some whale song!   2nd jump was a drift of Fantasy reef, again a real crowd pleaser, with huge turtles, octopus, puffer fish, various shoals of reef fish, big eels, plus more turtles!   thanks to all for safe diving!  larry, dave, sophie

Where my bubbles at?!

Monday morning was a great day for diving on the Sea Hound. Our boat today was full of certified divers and snorkels. Weather was sunny and windy with a boat full of excited divers. Our first dive site was Koko Crater, where we moored under the little Buddha. Below we had a nice visibility for our snorkels with schools of the Humuhumu-Eleele Trigger fish and Pennant Butterfly fish. Below the divers spotted green sea turtles and spotted moray eels. After showing our divers the stone Buddhas guarding the dive site we surfaced for hot tea and cookies. For the next dive site was stopped at Turtle Canyons. As soon we hit the water a White spotted Eagle Ray cruised right below our fins. Below we had a bit of thermocline, the bottom of the reef looked like a scary movie when the fog starts rolling in creating an eerie atmosphere. Into the fog we went, looking for eels and scorpion fish. Down below we spotted a few snowflake eels and yellowtail coris, we also came across a small green sea turtles who decided to stroll by for a closer look. Closer to the top of the reed we come across Lau-Ipala yellow tang and cleaner wrasse in a feeding frenzy!

LCU/Fantasy Saturday! Dec 13

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0191.

A blustery Saturday morning as our divers ( Keith, JD, Matthew, Pam, Drew, Richard, Joe, Jason, Dave, Ray, Nicholas, Sharron, and Mark) jumped on the Sea Hound for parts unknown. LCU was requested and we made our way out to the wreck. After a briefing our divers made their way down the line and we greeted by 5 White tips resting under the ship. Just outside the perimeter flew a pair of Spotted Eagle rays, and a Moray Eel made a rare swim bye. As usual the LCU didn’t disappoint.

After a short surface interval we decided to drift Fantasy Reef, a favorite spot of Larry’s, who guided the group to a awesome tour of the site. First up was an Octopus…

WRECK WEEK FINALE !! 12 December

Wreck week flew by, as we had a blast traveling to various dive sites around Oahu that have the awesome wrecks.  today were two of the best sites for big animals also!!  LCU is rife with big whitetip sharks and eagle rays.  and they manage to appear at different parts of the dive so we get to see them all!  the sharks like the dark resting spot beneath the LCU and don’t really mind us cruising through to snap a few photos.  and i love to sneak up behind the eagle rays and join their formation! also some barracuda and lots of snappers today!  great fun.  it was also Monono’s (that what Davy calls Monolo when he goofs in the shop) birthday, so it was great to have him out for support, and we harassed him all day long!  the wreck weekers were paul, karchi, mark, michelle, dave, plus ryan and mike, all great divers and wonderful people.  2nd jump was a drift from new (or big) barge to baby barge.  always fun to explore and cover some distance!  so 3 wrecks today!!   along the way we saw turtles and eels, plus nice corral and shoaling reef fish!  thanks to all for safe diving!!  Larry, Manolo, and cap Sophie.

Rainbow Wednesday!

one

Oh Hawaii! The day started out as a rainy, overcast, dark Wednesday for our divers Taran, Molly, and Mitchell (students) Jeremy and Amber (DSDs) Kari, Ryan, Austin, and Tyler (Certified) as we moored up to Koko Crater for some schoolin’ and divin’. Our students all descended onto the floor of Koko Crater where they aced their skills! It was then on to a quick tour of the surrounding crater where there were turtles napping all around the ridge…

and of course Snow Flake Eels…

Once all our divers were once again aboard it was on to the next site… Anglers Reef. Skills were accomplished with the greatest of ease by our students and we set off to discover what creatures were out and about… reef fish of all kinds swam under the ledges (Moorish Idols, Trumpet fish, Puffer fish, Butterfly fish) and of course old grumpy…

the beloved Morey Eel…

As we headed back into the bay the sun finally made an appearance, and a perfect rainbow appeared… a great ending to a great day of diving! Thanks to all our divers for a fun and safe day of diving!
