SHARK CAVE – OCCUPIED!! 14 july

sweet dive day today with blue skies and great visibility! some big waves as a summer swell is hitting Oahu’s south shore with 6 footers.  the surfers are loving it, but that makes for a bit of surge underwater.  but the current was mild so a bit of surge is kind of fun to swim in.  we moored up at baby barge and dropped down on a free descent so we could visit the shark cave, which had a good sized white tip shark relaxing inside.   heading up the ledge we saw turtles and eels, and at the wreck, another shark!  nice dive!!  But even better was our drift of  Fantasy Reef, where our gang was stoked to see the huge turtles that live there!  also more sharks, sponge crabs, slipper lobster, plus a moray with a cleaner shrimp working on his teeth!  thanks to francisco and natalia from columbia, and ron, brent, and manolo for coming out to dive with us.  good job all, larry, joe, max

A Bit of Everything – 7/12

For our afternoon aboard the Sea Fox, we had some Certified Divers, a few Open Water Students and, a couple Discover Scuba Diving participants. Our first stop was Koko Craters where Chris led some folks on a tour, while Everett put His students through their required skills and my new divers demonstrated their aptitude and then went on a short tour. We got to see some pincushion starfish, a stout moray eel, some reef fish, and at least two statues under water.

A short distance away is Turtle Canyon where the same groups explored for a bit. This was really nice, with great visibility, a little current, and tons of reef fish, a few eels, and even a green sea turtle cruising around. The pufferfish hangout is always a highlight for me at this location and we found one huge one hiding out in his cave. Thanks to all our divers for making it a great afternoon..

Aloha,

Thanks for choosing to dive with Island Divers Hawai’i.  We had a very relaxed afternoon on the Dive Barge.  Aughie came out with his rescue class of: Jeff, Bruce, Adrian, and Daniel.  All of our students rescheduled so Leslie and I were able to take our time and enjoy the dives.  On Angler’s Reef we had a max depth of 50′ and had a total bottom time of :46. We saw two spotted eagle rays, a horned helmet shell, tons of eels, and a leaf scorpion fish!  Leslie is so lucky when it comes to attracting spotted eagle rays.  Since the boat was all advanced divers, Capt. Greg took us to Spitting Caves.  We had a max depth of about 60′ and had a bottom time of :36.  We saw lots of turtles, another sponge crab, a cow fish, and lots of reef fish.  Congrats to the rescue class on completing your certification.  Thanks again for choosing to spend your Sunday afternoon diving with IDH.   Until next time, dive easy!

Aloha,

Amy

Shark Sighting Saturday 7/12/14

Weather Conditions: Sunny, slight breeze, 81 degrees

Dive Conditions: 100+ visibility, mild current
Marine Life Observed: 3 sharks, tons of turtles, TURKEY fish, nudibranchs, and a rock scorpion fish

Aloha,

Thanks for choosing to dive with Island Divers Hawaii.  We had another beautiful Saturday on the water. Danica and Dennis were out joining us for their last weekend of diving before heading back home to Kansas.  We also had Bruce, Jonathan, Nick, Krishna, Seana, Wyatt, Matt, Kevin, and Leslie joining us for some fun in the sun and water!!!  On our first dive we had great visibility and a descent current.  Our max depth was about 85′ and we had a total bottom time of :36.  Since there was a strong current, we used the lines all the way to the wreck and then headed to the small cave on the right side.  We didn’t see a shark, but did find some beautiful sea turtles.  After that we zigzagged across the wreck looking at the reef fish and nudis.  We were all great on our air and headed to the shark cave.  We were rewarded with a HUGE white tip reef shark.  I’m talking biggest reef shark I’ve seen in Hawai’i waters!  It was a fantastic score at the end of our great dive.  We then had an hour long surface interval which was just enough time to switch tanks and get our fill of Famous Amos cookies, Red Vines, and hot chocolate.  Early morning sugar high, check!   Max (captain in training) then took us to Fantasy Reef.  Danica requested sharks and we happily provided them again!  On this site we found two more white tip reef sharks! Woohoo!  We also saw tons of turtles, a turkey fish, a rock scorpion fish, and lots of eels!  As you might guess, we had a great time on Fantasy Reef.  Over all, today was another epic day of diving in HI.  Thanks again for choosing to spend your Saturday morning diving with IDH.  It was our pleasure to escort you in the underwater paradise of HI.  Until next time, dive easy!

Welcome to the Dark Side..7/10

It turned out to be an awesome night to go diving in Maunalua Bay! With Mary, Mike, and Tom geared up and ready, we jumped in at Kahala Barge around dusk, just a little after 7pm. Bumpy on the surface, we were delighted to find a very light current and great visibility at the wreck. The night-time critters were beginning to stir and a small White Tip Reef Shark greeted us at the stern. It was getting quite dark by the time we returned to the Sea Fox and headed in to calmer waters. It was a little surgy at Anglers Reef, but what a great dive! Well after dark now, we found crustaceans galore, including a Sponge Crab, Coral Crabs, and Sand Crabs, as well as Helmet Snails out roaming, a few Eels, Parrot Fish, and a bright red Frogfish. Too many goodies to list really, this is why I love night dives! Let’s do it again..soon. Mahalo for joining us for another spectacular trip aboard the Sea Fox.

Oahu diving at its best!

It was a great day to learn how to dive! We have been graced with some fantastic weather the last few days and it definitely showed today underwater. We had a sunny day with a slight breeze which made for great conditions up on deck. We were joined by many families aboard the Sea Fox, many of which came from all levels of diving, which made for an exciting day. We headed out to our first site, Turtle Canyons, and dropped down into some crystal clear waters.

With a wide variety of divers, we decided it would be best to separate into groups to make our dives more efficient. Jessie and Carlos took a group of first time divers for their Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience, and they had a fantastic time! There really is nothing like being underwater for the first time. Larry led a group of certified divers who were very anxious to get their feet wet again. I (Marnie) took a few students, one who was working toward their Open Water certification, another doing a Navigation specialty. We made our way through a predetermined course using our compass as our guide. It such a great way to advance your skills as a diver, and its a lot of fun!

During our surface interval, we had some time to review our skills, look up some fish, and learn a little bit more about diving. For some of the divers, it was great to swap stories and travel experiences with other divers. After all, there is always something we can learn about our underwater world.

At our second dive site, Koko Crater, we again had the chance to see a lot of eels! Today was definatly a day for looking at all the different species of eels that we have here in Hawaii.

The students had the chance to yet again work with the compass and navigate around the dive site. Koko Crater is such a fantastic site to train at, and there is always so much to see!

The certified divers had a chance for a longer dive which allowed for them to check out the overhangs and all of the cool features of this underwater “cleaning station”. We of course were greeted by the friendly sea turtles and had a great time experiencing their world.

We made our way back aboard the Sea Fox and made our way back into the Hawaii Kai marina just before dinnertime. Such a great way to spend a Thursday afternoon!

July 10- Why do the turtles love it in Maunalua Bay?

Why do the turtles love it in Maunalua Bay? Is it the same reason Island Divers Hawaii loves it? It could be the fabulous currents that speed us along on our dive at just the right speed, or the colorful coral and 100 foot plus viz. Or is it the underwater ridges that are riddled throughout the bay, or the random mounds of unexpected barges and piles of artificial reef?  Or wait, maybe it’s the sharks, turtles, and monk seals all living right here in our bay! While turtles aren’t the smartest animals in the sea they sure know a choice spot when they find it.  A college professor once told me, “Davy, find out where you’re the happiest, move there, then worry about finding work.”  Only problem is those darn turtles took all the best spots!

Whatever your answer is about why you love Maunalua Bay, share it, I’d love you hear what you love about scuba diving in Maunalua Bay.

Safe Diving,
Davy

A New Level of Diving 7/9

It was another great morning off the Sea Fox today with a small group of divers.  We had Matt and Brit on the boat on their first deep dive as we dropped in on the LCU.  There was a bit of a current as we got down the line but we had great visibility. We found a couple frogfish on the wreck and there were large schools of goatfish swimming around.  There wasn’t any larger animals but plenty of reef fish everywhere. We also found a large undulated morey on top of the wreck right before coming up the line.

For the second dive we drifted Spitting Caves and had a nice current and great viz on the site.  There were goatfish, butterflyfish, and wrasses all over the reef. We had a few turtles around the site as well swimming about.  As we moved along the reef we found a few white tip reef hiding out in a couple caves.  There was also another frogfish on the reef and a few eels hiding about.  We had a wonderful morning today.

Family Frenzy!

It’s great to see so many friends and families spending their summer days out diving with us! Today we had a number of relatives diving and enjoying the warm summer weather. We had DSD’s, students, and certified divers all joining us on the afternoon charter aboard the Sea Fox. After listening to a short briefing, we all mad our way out to our first dive site.

At our first dive site, Turtle Canyons, we had a chance to see large schools of fish as well as complete some skills. Divers got an up close encounter with some green sea turtles, which is a Hawaiian favorite!

It was busy on the reef!

We had some first time divers out on the boat with us and they were thrilled to experience life under the ocean for the first time. We had some younger children aboard with us who were more then excited to check out what life was like underwater.

FIND THE FROGGERS ! 8 July

another great set of dives today, and your challenge is to find any and all frogfish in the photos.  chris and mike, plus the two jacks, jr and senior, as well as Jim from Melbourne (he likes our water temperature here!), were all out for fun today.  Baby Barge was 150 viz, with moderate current, so we visited the shark cave and cruised up the ledge to the wreck spotting turtles, eels, reef fish, and more turtles.  also a shark in the cave under the wreck!  2nd jump was a drift of our beloved Spitting Cave, with its superb topography and varied and prolific sea life, our first times there were just blown away.  turtles, sharks, 1000’s of reef fish, octopus, and a bunch of scorpionfish and frogfish!  the current was mild, and the viz was 100 foot plus, so great conditions for a great group of divers!  thanks to all for safe diving, larry and Admiral Kendal
