Island Divers Hawaii offers some of the best boat charters on the island! You can choose from so many options you will not be able to do everything in one vacation. You can always jump on our morning charters and dive over eleven wrecks that we visit throughout the week. We are one of the only dive centers that do not go to the same two sites every day, and we give our customers the option to make requests on where they want to dive.
About Matt Zimmerman
Matt moved to the island of Oahu in the year 2000 after completing a Ph.D in Biomedical Sciences at UCSD. Having already completed a PADI Instructor level certification, it soon became clear to Matt that one could support an avid diving habit on the island of Oahu by taking island visitors scuba diving – score!
What was at first an informal local diving club quickly became a part time business run from a one bedroom ground floor apartment in Waikiki. That part time business soon became a full time endeavor with a new friends/divemasters helping out (moved up to 2 bedroom apartment). Eventually, a strong local reputation led to a diving service contract on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam and the evolution of Island Divers Hawaii into a traditional, established dive store.
Success serving the military led to the opening of a second retail location at the Hawaii Kai marina and shortly thereafter the addition of the vessel Sea Fox imported from Florida. Since then the scuba dive vessels Dive Barge, Sea Hound, and Enzo were added to the fleet. While a couple of those vessels are leased out to other interests, we still go diving on them from time to time. Matt believes that the success Island Divers has enjoys comes from his position that customers are friends.
Matt started Island Divers with the goal of making customers into friends, and that principle has guided the growth of the business. Matt tells a story to each new instructor that comes into the business. “A diver may remember what they saw on the dive, but for sure they will remember how they were treated at the dive shop and how you made them feel about diving with Island Divers”. The dive professionals selected to work at Island Divers are chosen because they are friendly, outgoing people that truly enjoy sharing their passion for diving with a new group of divers every day. The people you will find on this page are the best of the best.
Most recently, Matt became the president of Hawaii Scuba University. Coming full circle back to academic life and incorporating of a decade of experience in the diving industry, he is very excited about the training programs being offered and is looking forward to tackling the opportunities the school represents.

There are many different characters in the diving industry, but who do you trust to take you in the water? How do you decide which Instructor is for you?If you are a new diver you want someone who is patient, experienced, and safety oriented. If you are an advanced diver you want a professional that respects your independence while staying close by as a safety diver. Either way, you want above all, clear communication between you and your instructors, with detailed briefings on what you are about to do.
Getting certified in diving is an investment, and making sure you like breathing underwater is the first step towards committing to that investment. Sign up for a Discover Scuba Experience, and get a brief glimpse and a little experience in a controlled setting of what you’re getting yourself into. Diving is a wonderful life changing experience that can be very addictive but make sure you enjoy the experience of weightlessness in a vast ocean with tons of marine life around you.
Always thought that the Dive Guide would look after you, it was their responsibility, not yours? Well if you’re ready or not once you are a certified diver you are certifiably responsible for yourself. Interestingly enough, its not until you complete your Rescue Diver course that your view will change and you will learn the reality of being a certified diver. You are responsible for yourself, your buddy and, in fact sometimes anyone else that you come in contact with in a diving environment (i.e. those who come to you in an out of air situation). If anything went wrong, would you be able to deal with it?
Hawaii has been a popular diving location for many years offering year round warm waters and some of the most famous dive sites in the world. Diving in the Hawaiian Islands is popular for its underwater topography and incredible diversity of fish species, over 30% of which are found nowhere else in the world. There are amazing formations like lava tubes and caverns formed from volcanic eruptions.
Why not learn together as a family and enjoy many future underwater adventures at any of the fantastic dive sites around Oahu? There are many diving certification options for the whole family to get wet while on vacation in Hawaii. Not only does Island Divers Hawaii offer the full range of PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) courses, but we offer free transportation to and from your Waikiki hotel! That way all you have to worry about is how much fun you will have learning to dive with the whole family.
Scuba Diving is not an inexpensive hobby from certifications to gear purchase; it is definitely an investment for serious divers. However to get certified it can be quite economical if you work with the right Dive Center who is looking to get people diving, not just make money off their one time certification. Trusted PADI Dive Centers like Island Divers Hawaii offer low cost certifications so people get in the water and continue their diving experience well after their certification.
Today we did an unusual trip across to our nearest neighboring island, Molokai, for some scuba Diving. Leaving Friday night we motored across the channel with our captains Joe and Tim taking turns while the customers and staff slept in the cabin or out on the deck. After a rather adventurous crossing we made it […]
